On the Origin of S0 Galaxies

چکیده

I will review the basic properties of S0 galaxies in the local Universe in relation to both elliptical and spiral galaxies, their neighbours on the Hubble sequence, and also in relation to dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. This will include colours, luminosities, spectral features, information about the age and metallicity composition of their stellar populations and globular clusters, about their ISM content, as well as kinematic signatures and their implications for central black hole masses and past interaction events, and the number ratios of S0s to other galaxy types in relation to environmental galaxy density. I will point out some caveats as to their morphological discrimination against other classes of galaxies, discuss the role of dust and the wavelength dependence of bulge/disk light ratios. These effects are of importance for investigations into the redshift evolution of S0 galaxies – both as individual objects and as a population. The various formation and transformation scenarios for S0 and dSph galaxies will be presented and confronted with the available observations.

Formation of a polar-ring galaxy in a galaxy merger

We numerically investigate stellar and gas dynamics in star-forming and dissipative galaxy mergers between two disk galaxies with specific orbital configurations. We find that violent relaxation combined with gaseous dissipation in galaxy merging transforms two disk galaxies into one S0 galaxy with polar-rings: Both the central S0-like host and the polar-ring component in a polar-ring galaxy ar...

Faint Fuzzies and the Formation of Lenticular Galaxies

We investigate the dynamical state of a new class of extended star clusters, known as ”Faint Fuzzies”, that were discovered in two nearby S0 galaxies, NGC 1023 and NGC 3384. It is shown that the Faint Fuzzies of NGC 1023 lie in a fast rotating ring-like structure within the galactic disk with mean radius of 5 kpc, rotational velocity of 200 km/s and velocity dispersion of 115 km/s. We propose a...

We combine morphological classifications from deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) imaging of a sample of three clusters at z = 0.31 and a further nine clusters at z = 0.37–0.56 with existing spectroscopic observations of their elliptical (E) and S0 populations, to study the relative spectral properties of these two galaxy types. We have also used spectroscopic and imaging data in the Coma cluste...

Current star formation in early-type galaxies and the K+A phenomenon

We present the results of an effort to identify and study a sample of the likely progenitors of elliptical (E) and lenticular (S0) K+A galaxies. To achieve this, we have searched a sample ∼11,000 nearby (mr <16) early-type galaxies selected by morphology from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Main spectroscopic sample for actively star-forming E and S0 galaxies. Using emission line ratios and...

The Effects of Interactions on the Structure and Morphology of Elliptical/Lenticular galaxies in Pairs

We present a structural and photometric analysis of 42 elliptical/lenticular galaxies in (E/S0 + S) pairs observed in the BV RI color bands. The aim of the analysis is to empirically determine the effects of interactions on their morphology, structure and stellar populations as seen from the light concentration (C), asymmetry (A), and clumpiness (S) parameters. We further compare these values t...
